From what I understand, Will Smith directed this episode since his own father was absent during his childhood, and he hated the script for this scene. So he improvised all of his lines. And then at the end he thought the cameras had stopped rolling, and that is when he said “How come he don’t want me, man?” And Uncle Phil hugged him. It ended up being so potently perfect that they kept it.
